Automated Copper Loop Testing for Broadband and Voice Services Support

Advances in switching and voice and data transmission technologies have significantly changed the telecommunications industry in recent years. However, efficiently maintaining the copper plant is still one of the primary business concerns for telecom service providers. The deployment of new services (e.g., IPTV and VoIP), and transmission technologies (e.g., Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)) places even more stringent transmission requirements on the copper segment of the network.

The cost associated with maintaining the copper loop plant is among the largest service providers face. Aging plant, as well as the need to carry even more complex services over the existing copper, requires significant field-related efforts. At the same time, competitive pressures continue to drive down the per-line revenue for voice and data services, making the reduction of maintenance costs of even greater importance.

Voice and data services maintenance must also address the increasing competitive and regulatory pressures to reduce repair times and increase the quality of service. This is made more difficult due to the reduction in field craft numbers and expertise.
